Technological revolution in sight for Wimbledon. The oldest tennis tournament in the world and the most tied to tradition has announced that a starting from the 2025 edition, line judges will no longer be presentwhich will be replaced on all fields byElectronic Line Calling.

A turning point that follows the decision taken byATP in 2023 to introduce electronic calls in all its tournaments starting from the 2025 season, in order to avoid as much as possible the controversies which, as in the case of Monte Carlo – when an incorrect call disadvantaged Jannik Sinner against Stephens Tsitsipas -, have characterized this season.

And in the end too Wimbledonthe slam that has always been more linked to traditions, has bowed to technology. From the 2025 edition of Championships in fact the line judges will no longer be present, made even more famous by the elegant uniforms that have always distinguished them, and after 147 years they will be replaced by theElectronic Line Calling.

This is the press release Wimbledon through which we thank the line judges and announce the transition to electronic calls: “After careful evaluations of the results of the tests carried out during the last Championships, we considered this technology sufficiently reliable and the time has therefore come to take this step aimed at seeking ever greater accuracy in the refereeing management of matches.

Players will therefore benefit from the same conditions they have already experienced in numerous other tournaments on the circuit. At Wimbledon we take the task of balancing tradition and innovation very seriously. Line judges have played a central role at Championships for many decades and by thanking them for their commitment and service, we recognize their invaluable contribution”.

The times of the final also change

However, electronic calls will not be the only significant change for the 2025 edition of Wimbledon. In fact, from next year the women’s and men’s singles finals will be played at 5:00 pm (Italian time) and no longer at 3:00 pm, while the doubles finals will be scheduled for 2:00 pm.
