From cars and construction textiles, it becomes a new product

With the support of the European Union as part of the “EU for Green Agenda in Serbia” project, two companies in the vicinity of Belgrade recycle automotive and construction textile waste and make new products. Thus, they contribute to the transition from a linear to a circular business model, i.e. more efficient use of resources and energy, reduction of waste and emissions of greenhouse gases (GHG), as well as environmental protection.

“These are just two of the numerous examples of how the EU supports Serbian entrepreneurs. We give them the opportunity to use their creativity and ingenuity to help in the green transition, while contributing to economic growth. Ecology and economy must go hand in hand. Sustainable businesses are the key to a greener future. We all benefit when companies are environmentally conscious,” he said NJ.E. Emanuele Žiofreambassador and head of the Delegation of the European Union in Serbia.

Thanks to EU co-financing, the company “Steel Impex” has acquired an accompanying air filtration system for its facility in Krnješevci, along with equipment that enables it to recycle 80-90% of a vehicle. By separating different fractions of metal from automotive waste, the company will produce high-purity metal granulate, which can be used by domestic foundries. This will reduce the amount of automotive waste in the country by over 165,000 tons over the next 20 years.

“Reusing and reducing waste is good for the environment, people and their health, but also for the economy, because it reduces business costs and increases the competitiveness of companies on foreign markets. Together with the European Union and other partners, UNDP will continue to support innovators whose initiatives contribute to the green transition of the Serbian economy and society,” he said. Jakup Berispermanent representative of UNDP in Serbia.

The EU ambassador and the permanent representative of UNDP also visited the company “ArTech Inženjering” from Dobanovice, which develops a new material – “reteks” – from textile scraps from the production of tents, awnings and tarpaulins. This material is suitable for use in construction as insulation and in interior decoration.

As part of the “EU for the Green Agenda” project, 66 “green” innovations with a total value of 25 million USD have received financial support from the EU, Switzerland and the Government of Serbia for implementation in practice.

The presentation of the innovations of the companies “Steel Impex” and “ArTech Inženjering” was organized within the project “EU for the Green Agenda in Serbia”, which, with the technical and financial support of the European Union and in partnership with the Ministry of Environmental Protection, is implemented by UNDP in cooperation with the Embassy of Sweden and by the European Investment Bank (EIB), with additional financial resources provided by the governments of Sweden, Switzerland and Serbia.
