From episode 1: MDR presents “Elephant, Tiger & Co.” completely in the ARD media library

Mitteldeutscher Rundfunk has already produced more than 1,000 episodes of the popular series “Elefant, Tiger & Co.” in over 20 years and is now bringing them to the media library.

Since this Wednesday, MDR has been repeating the series on television every day from 10:30 a.m. from the very first episode from 2003 and is also including all episodes in the ARD media library. According to MDR, the repetition of the first episodes, which only last 15 minutes instead of today’s 25 minutes, has long been a wish of the loyal fan base. The original aesthetics of the first years should be deliberately preserved and the episodes will therefore be broadcast in the 4:3 format that was still used at the time.

Now over 1,100 episodes

“Elephant, Tiger & Co.” is the only zoo documentary soap on ARD that is still producing new episodes today. The series has now reached episode 1.104, every Friday at 7:50 p.m. there are new stories on MDR television with insights behind the scenes of the Leipzig Zoo.

The beginning of the successful series was already accompanied by celebrities in 2003: Stefan Mross and Stefanie Hertel, then still a folk music couple, immortalized their handprints on the then TatzenPROMInade in Leipzig Zoo in the first episode. Together with a plaster cast of the elephant boy Voi Nam, their traces were recorded for posterity, accompanied by zoo director Jörg Junhold.

Offshoot with young people is running successfully

There is now already an offshoot “Elefant, Tiger & Co.”: The series “Elefant, Tiger & Kids” season follows six young people during an internship at Leipzig Zoo. Among other things, they are supposed to prepare field hamsters that are threatened with extinction for their release into the wild, give freedom back to wild birds that have been bred in Dresden, and accompany the lynx on its return to the Thuringian Forest. At the Leipzig Zoo, the young people should discover all facets of Leipzig Zoo and gain insights into their dream job as a zookeeper. The episodes of the first and second seasons of “Elephant, Tiger & Kids” are in the Kika player and in the ARD media library available. The first season of the spin-off was honored at the “Golden Sparrow” television award this year.
