Gabriela Ruse is in the second round at the WTA 250 tournament in Iasi

  • Gabriela Ruse is the first Romanian player to pass the first round at the inaugural edition of the WTA 250 tennis tournament in Iasi.
  • She qualified with a three-set victory over Russian Anastasia Tikhonova.
  • Miriam Bulgaru also plays on Sunday evening with second favorite Tatjana Maria.

Gabriela Ruse (149 WTA), also a beneficiary of a wild card, won the match that started several hours late, due to the rain, with 6-3, 5-7, 6-1, after two hours of play.

The Romanian won the first set with two breaks, the last in game 9, in which she capitalized on the fifth set point.

The second act was more balanced, with Ruse leading with 1-4 and two breaks. The Romanian came back and equalized at 4-4, then 5-5, after another exchange of breaks. The Russian athlete won the last two games and sent the match to a decisive set.



A decisive set in which Tikhonova’s game (194 WTA) suffered a lot, Ruse managing to win it 6-1, in just 32 minutes.

Ruse can meet in the second round Jaqueline Cristian, who plays on Monday, in the first round, with the Italian Nuria Brancaccio (232 WTA), who came from the qualifications, as a lucky loser.

Qualifying in the second round brings Ruse a prize of 3,512 euros and 30 WTA points.

The Romanians Anca Todoni and Miriam Bulgaru also play in the main table of the tournament from Iasi. The main favorite is the 17-year-old Russian Mirra Andreeva, 31st WTA.

Irina Bara was eliminated in the first round, after losing to the Spanish Marina Bassols on Sunday.
