According to Gartner’s latest forecast, global IT spending is expected to reach $5.74 trillion in 2025. This corresponds to an increase of 9.3 percent compared to 2024. The GenAI boom in particular is causing server sales to increase exponentially.

“Currently, generative AI (GenAI) spending is primarily driven by technology companies that provide the necessary infrastructure,” explains John-David Lovelock, Distinguished VP Analyst at Gartner. “Starting in 2025, CIOs will begin investing in GenAI beyond just proof-of-concepts. Investments will increase, but at the same time expectations of GenAI’s capabilities will be put into perspective. The capabilities of the current GenAI models and the quality of the existing data will not be able to meet today’s high expectations.”
Server sales drive data center segment
Spending on data center systems will increase by almost 35% by 2024. While the segment won’t see the same jump as 2025, it will still grow by nearly $50 billion by 2025. This development will be led by server sales, which will almost triple from more than $134 billion in 2023 to $332 billion in 2028, including more than $257 billion in 2025.
“GenAI will easily dwarf the impact that cloud and outsourcing providers have had on data center systems in recent years,” said Lovelock. “It took 20 years for cloud and outsourcing providers to grow server spending to $67 billion per year. GenAI’s demand will help nearly triple server revenue from 2023 to 2028.”
Software and services push IT growth
Software spending is expected to grow 14% to $1.23 billion by 2025, up from 11.7% in 2024. For IT services, Gartner forecasts growth of 9.4% to 1, $73 billion in 2025 versus 5.6% in 2024.
“Software and IT services are an important driver of IT growth,” said Lovelock. “Spending in these segments is expected to be on AI-related projects, including email and authoring. This market, despite its age and consolidation among a small number of players, will contribute $6.6 billion to global spending in 2024 and $7.4 billion in 2025, driven in part by GenAI products and services .
“Our forecast is that spending will increase by $500 billion each year in terms of growth rates. “With this in mind, IT spending is expected to exceed $7 trillion in 2028,” explains Lovelock.
