Gazell opens another restaurant and conquers more and more markets with beer. “We want to be the best in the world.”

Ardo Uudmäe, the manager of Põhjala Tap Room and Põhja Konna, who reached the Gaselli TOP for the first time this year, has managed both the beer restaurant and the parent company Põhjala Bruulikoda for eight months. Uudmäe jokingly recalls the first cries of fright that the new company manager will come from Saku Brewery. Despite this, the collective has embraced him well.

According to Uudmäe, the corona pandemic is one of the main reasons why Põhjala Tap Room and Põhja Konna can be found in Gaselli’s TOP this year. Although the turnover fell sharply, the restaurant was able to come out of the crisis stronger than ever. “This is largely thanks to the help of the state. The grants that were given to companies in our sector helped us to keep the team together and the company to stay afloat.” Uudmäe points out that despite the tough times, Nordic catering businesses have managed to retain team members who unwaveringly carry forward their passion for craft beer to the world.

According to Uudmäe, it was nice to see Põhjala in the Gaselli TOP, but it was not a goal in itself. “Põhjala’s goal is to bring this exciting craft beer to more and more people in the world. These experiences, which we consider important, could also be appreciated by the majority of Estonian consumers.” Uudmäe also points out that Põhjala wants to be known and recognized in the world with its production. This is also confirmed by the wide export market, which includes more than 30 countries both in Europe and in other parts of the world.

Nordic businesses do not stop growing. Uudmäe lifted the veil of secrecy that a new restaurant inspired by Japanese cuisine is about to be built, the concept of which will be unique in Estonia. According to the manager, they are on schedule and the new restaurant should be ready at the end of October.

In addition, we talked about the promotion of beer culture both in Estonia and in other parts of the world. We talked about the role the brewery plays in the development of the restaurant business and whether and how domestic alcohol could be a vitalizer of the Estonian economy.

The show is hosted by Julia Laidvee.

Gazelle movement is supported by AJ Products, Cumultec and Finora Bank.
