Russian gas company Gazprom announced this Saturday that it will cut gas supplies to Moldova from January 1, after denouncing the Moldovan state gas company, Moldovagaz, for breach of contract.
Gazprom sent a notice to Moldovagaz, which it accuses of refusing to settle an outstanding debt for gas supplies and not regularly fulfilling payment obligations, “which constitutes a significant violation of the terms” of the contract.
“Based on these provisions, from 08:00 on January 1, 2025, PJSC Gazprom will introduce a limitation on the supply of natural gas to the Republic of Moldova at 0 cubic meters per day,” the Russian company said in a statement.
Russia supplies Moldova with around two billion cubic meters of gas per year through Ukraine, which has already announced its intention not to extend a gas transit agreement with Gazprom that expires on December 31.
Moldovan President Maia Sandu has accused Gazprom of causing an energy crisis and claims the Russian gas company refuses to supply gas via an alternative route.
For this reason, the government announced, on Friday, the beginning of restrictions on energy exports and limitations on its use for public lighting and institutional installations.
