In the indictment prepared within the scope of the investigation conducted by the İzmir Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office regarding the deaths of Özge Ceren Deniz (23) and İnanç Öktemay (44) who stepped into a puddle of water during a downpour in the Konak district of İzmir on July 12, it was revealed that GDZ Elektrik was called several times by shopkeepers regarding the electricity leakage.

Many shopkeepers stated that the problem has been going on for 5-6 years and that they had complained about electrical leaks before İZSU’s grating work. Eyewitness and shopkeeper EEÇ. stated in his statement, “I witnessed a few stray animals getting electrocuted here. After the issue was reported in the media, Gediz Electricity workers came to this area and dug up the area where the smoke was coming from. They changed the electrical cables and closed up the area they dug up again. However, after the work, smoke continued to come out of this sidewalk during the rainy periods. I repeatedly reported the situation but no work was done.”

SUSPECTS AT THE COURTHOUSE

On the other hand, 6 of the 33 people detained within the scope of the investigation launched regarding the incident were released by the prosecutor’s office’s decision, while 27 suspects were referred to the courthouse.
