Geoffrey Hinton, also called the Godfather of AI, warns that artificial intelligence will lead to the extinction of humans

Professor Geoffrey Hinton, known as the “Godfather of AI”, warns that artificial intelligence could lead to the extinction of humanity within the next ten years. He calls for strict government regulations, writes The Telegraph.

Professor Geoffrey Hinton, one of the pioneers of artificial intelligence, has warned that the technology could lead to the extinction of humanity within ten years.

He stated that the rapid development of AI is more dangerous than initially anticipated. Despite previously predicting a 10% risk of human extinction within the next three decades, he now believes the probability has increased, estimating it at between 10% and 20%.

The rapid evolution of AI, comparable to the Industrial Revolution

Hinton, who recently received the Nobel Prize in Physics, compared the rapid evolution of AI to the Industrial Revolution, pointing out that this time machines will not only replace physical labor, but replace human intelligence.

“Now we have something that replaces human intelligence. Ordinary human intelligence will no longer be relevant,” he said.

Hinton also expressed concern about the economic and social impact of AI, noting that while the technology could increase productivity, the benefits could be concentrated in the hands of the rich, leaving many people out of work and poorer.

The professor also said governments need to step in and regulate AI development to ensure research is safe, warning that corporate profit alone will not guarantee responsible development of the technology.

“Government regulation is needed to force large companies to do serious research into AI safety,” added Hinton.
