George Simion, the president of AUR and the party’s presidential candidate, claims that he would not encourage Romania’s entry into the Eurozone if he were elected president. Simion declares that he is not against the European Union, but supports not only national sovereignty, but also monetary sovereignty.
Independent candidate Mircea Geoană asked George Simion what the Maastricht Treaty criteria are for joining the Eurozone.
George Simion did not specifically answer the question, but emphasized that he would not, as head of state, support Romania’s accession to the Euro zone.
“I don’t think that Romania should leave the European Union. AUR does not advocate renouncing national sovereignty and monetary sovereignty, and we do not believe that Romania should enter the Euro zone at this time. (…) No one is forcing us to join the Eurozone and then I, as president, will not encourage the National Bank, which is currently led by a governor who also does not want us to give up monetary sovereignty”, he asserted George Simion in the debate organized by Digi 24, Monday evening.
Simion admitted that “we need a budget deficit as small as possible”.
“Furthermore, with Marcel Ciolacu as prime minister, the budget deficit will not decrease, but will increase,” said Simion.
