“We made a decision not to include the issue of starting negotiations with the European Union on the agenda until the end of 2028,” Kabahidze was quoted as saying by “Rustavi 2” TV channel.
The Prime Minister added that Georgia will refuse any EU budget grants. He pointed out that the end of 2028 is the deadline by which Tbilisi will be sufficiently prepared from an economic point of view to start accession negotiations with the EU with the aim of joining it in 2030.
Kabhidze also emphasized that Georgia’s relations with the EU are bilateral and can only be bilateral.
“We are a proud and self-respecting nation with a long history, and therefore it is categorically unacceptable for us to perceive integration into the EU as a mercy shown to us by the EU,” said the Prime Minister.
As reported, meanwhile, the European Parliament (EP) adopted a resolution on Thursday with 444 votes in favor, 72 against, and 82 abstentions, condemning the Georgian parliamentary elections held on October 26, as they were neither free nor fair.
Deputies emphasized that this is another confirmation that Georgia continues to retreat from democracy, for which the ruling party “Georgian Dream” is fully responsible.
LETA already wrote that the “Georgian Dream” won the Georgian parliamentary elections according to the official results, but the opposition parties and President Salome Zurabishvili do not recognize the election results, considering them fake.
The parliamentary elections were largely seen as an indicator of Georgians’ desire to join the EU.
