German retail trade demands national digitalization strategy

Handelverband Deutschland wants the national government to implement a 10-point plan to strengthen the innovative power of the retail sector.

HDE made the call on the first day of the DE.Digital-top in Frankfurt. This is a two-day government conference with 1,500 participants from science, technology, politics and business.

“As the country’s third largest economic sector, retail depends on a functioning digitalization strategy. There must be a real technology and innovation offensive in Germany and Europe,” say Stephan Tromp, deputy director of the interest group.

In terms of content the ten-point plan not surprising. In fact, HDE requires urgency in facilitating entrepreneurship, promoting automation, strengthening data sovereignty and removing unfair competition from outside the EU and investments in technology.

The first Digital Gipfel was held in 2006. Such a broad conference has never been organized in the Netherlands.
