BRUSSELS – According to recently published Eurostat data, the countries of the European Union produced a total of 34.3 billion liters of beer in 2023.
As statistics show, in 2023, 32.5 billion liters of beer with alcohol and 1.8 billion liters of beer with 0.5 percent alcohol or completely alcohol-free were produced in EU countries.
Compared to 2022, the production of alcoholic beer decreased by five percent, while non-alcoholic beer recorded a growth of 13.5 percent compared to 2022.
As far as beer production is concerned, Germany also achieved the best results in 2023 and produced a total of 7.2 billion liters of beer, which represents 22.3 percent of the total production in the European Union.
Second on the list is Spain, which produced four billion liters of beer, which is 12.4 percent of the total production in the EU.
In third place was Poland with 3.5 billion liters of beer produced, and in fourth place was the Netherlands with 2.4 billion liters of production.
Fifth place was taken by Belgium with the production of two billion liters of beer, which is 6.3 percent of the total EU production.
When it comes to exports, trade data show that the Netherlands continued to lead this sector in 2023. This country exported a total of 1.8 billion liters of beer, followed by Germany and Belgium, the Czech Republic and Ireland.
In terms of imports, France was still the largest importer of beer containing alcohol in 2023, with 900 million litres, representing 17.1 percent of total EU imports (inside and outside the EU). Other major importers were Italy with more than 700 million liters and Spain, the Netherlands and Germany with almost 600 million liters.
