Germany has pledged to achieve climate neutrality by 2045, and green hydrogen will play a significant role in that process.

The German government and several provincial governments have allocated 4.6 billion euros for a total of 23 green hydrogen projects related to the production, implementation of innovative storage solutions and the improvement of green hydrogen transport infrastructure, according to a statement from the German Federal Ministry of Economic Affairs and Climate Action.

The plan is to build a plant for the production of green hydrogen with a capacity of 1.4 GW, which will be powered by renewable energy sources and transport 1,800 tons of green hydrogen per year. The projects also include solutions for its storage capacity of 370 GWh, as well as the construction of 2,000 km of necessary infrastructure.

According to the Minister of Economic Affairs and Climate Action, Robert Hebek, by financing these projects, Germany is taking a big step towards a climate-neutral and sustainable economy in Europe and beyond.

He emphasized that a strong hydrogen infrastructure will play a key role in the decarbonization of German industry and the energy sector, and that hydrogen pipelines will become the arteries of industrial centers, creating preconditions for climate-neutral economic growth.

In addition to state funding, the European Union will provide part of the funds, while the companies involved in the projects will add another 3.3 billion euros. It is expected that the entire investment will reach a total of 7.9 billion euros by 2030.

Intensification of the import of green hydrogen is also planned

The Federal Ministry of Economic Affairs and Climate Action announced that the results of the first round of bidding for the import of green hydrogen within the H2Global program for the period between 2027 and 2033 are available.

At least 259 thousand tons of green ammonia will be imported into Germany, which is more than ten percent of Germany’s annual production of ammonia.

“The conclusion of the first contracts for the purchase of green hydrogen products is an important step towards the transformation of Germany as an industrial base, the achievement of our climate goals and the preservation of sustainable jobs in our country,” Hebeck said.

He adds that German industry needs large quantities of green hydrogen and its derivatives for the decarbonization of the economy, which requires imports from Europe and beyond, as well as domestic production of hydrogen. The successful auction within H2Global is the first step in this direction, and further steps will follow soon, notes the minister.
