Giannis Peristeras with a new record, with Pole and with a mistake in Imola!

by Dimitris Diatsidis

The last Race of the Italian CIV Yamaha R7 Cup Championship, in which 19-year-old Giannis Peristeras, with the Roc ‘n’ DeA team, and of course on a Yamaha R7 motorcycle, saw the Greek Champion excel in the Qualifying Tests, but due to a mistake agreement to lose the victory in the Race through his hands.
In particular, Peristeras – fresh from his tremendous success in the “Yamaha R7 SuperFinale” World Final, which took place at the French circuit Circuit Paul Ricard/Le Castellet – entered powerfully on the circuit that is his favorite in Italy and on the first day of the Free Trials he was second by just 0.027 of a second, but also a drop in a lap that was 4 tenths faster than everyone in the intermediate time trial before the finish.

He literally wrote his name in the relevant field with the 2024 Pole Position

On Saturday in Qualifying Tests this difference from all 28 CIV competitors showed on the timesheets as he not only took Pole Position by three tenths of a second from 2nd, but also set a new absolute track record for the class!
So in Sunday’s Race he started with an advantage and already in the 2nd lap he was first, with a group of three drivers following him and taking advantage of the slipstream to pass the Greek driver on the straights, with Peristeras almost always having his answer in the last inside the track before the finish line.

He led the race for 5 of the 10 laps and on the last lap he finished 2nd in the position he always passed in front. But the Greek driver – due to a misunderstanding with the team and the board that sees the information of the Race – thought it was the penultimate lap and changed his line, without overtaking, letting the other two who were following to pass, with the aim of pass them to the “last” round. He was surprised to see the checkered flag wave and himself in 4th place, in a Race that seemed to be in his control.
On the plus side, the whole circuit saw his speed and despite his disappointment he was congratulated by all the teams in the Italian Championship.
In the championship standings, he remained in 5th place, while with a win he would have taken 3rd.

“Yiannis was very fast on all three days of the Race and when I saw in the last intermediate time trial that he was 2nd, I thought we had won the Race, as in “Varianda Bassa”, he overtook him easily in every lap. But the correct understanding was not made with what he saw on the pit board and we were surprised to see him not pass! Such mistakes have been made many times in Games and it is a shame for Giannis who fully deserved the victory. I congratulate him for the very good time he did on Saturday and for his first Pole Position this year”.

“Since Friday, the team and I had the right settings for the Yamaha R7 and I was setting a comfortable time. The track record was a positive injection into my psychology and I went into the Race confident that I could follow the strategy we had calculated. Everything seemed to be going well, until something went wrong. It’s a shame for the team, for the points I lost in the Championship and for the fact that I would like to end the racing year in the CIV with a victory. I thank everyone who supported me this year and especially my father who made the sacrifices necessary for us to be here, since unfortunately the help we have from sponsors is very little. I hope for something better for next year”.
