The European Football Union (UEFA) has launched disciplinary proceedings against Spain captain Álvaro Morata and Germany’s best player of the championship, Rodrigo, for singing about Gibraltar’s claim to sovereignty at a European Championship celebration.

UEFA appointed a disciplinary inspector to assess potential breaches of its rules by the two players. The Gibraltar Football Federation has lodged a formal complaint with UEFA in this regard.
As thousands chanted “Gibraltar is Spain” at Monday’s celebration in Madrid, Morata and Rodri were in the front line, so to speak.
Gibraltar, on the southern tip of Spain, has been a British overseas territory for more than 300 years. UEFA has not given a timetable for a possible case that could see players banned from Nations League matches in September.
The Spanish defeated the English 2:1 in the final of the European Championship 2024 and won the fourth title of European champions. Morata completed his transfer from Atlético Madrid to AC Milan on Friday. Rodri plays for Manchester City.
One sanction related to indecent behavior of a player was born directly during the European championship in Germany.
Albanian footballer Mirlind Daku was banned for two matches for chanting nationalist slogans against Serbs and North Macedonians together with Albanian fans.
