Gimp 3.0 is already at the doors

After years of waiting and continuous work, the arrival of GIMP 3.0 is closer than ever. This image editor, born from the collective effort of free software, has managed to establish itself as a solid alternative to commercial tools. Since its debut, GIMP has remained true to its goal of offering a free and powerful solution for image editing, attracting amateurs and professionals alike. Its flexibility and customization, along with the support of an active community, have made it a benchmark in the world of open source.

This weekend a new step was taken towards this long-awaited launch, with the announcement of the second version candidate (RC2)which incorporates important improvements and corrections compared to the first RC. Among the most notable advances is the solution to the problem of migrating settings from GIMP 2.10, which were previously not imported correctly. Additionally, a bug in macOS related to font display has been fixed, thanks to updating the Pango library to version 1.55.0.

Another significant change isImproved integration with darktablewhich now allows for more seamless import and export of images between both applications, which is key for those working with advanced editing flows. A new GEGL filters API has also been implemented, designed to allow developers to create non-destructive effects or apply changes more immediately, improving the experience for both users and programmers.

This advance is the most recent in a path that began to be clearly defined in October 2024when the first GIMP 3.0 release candidate was released. As we already told you at MuyComputer, that version marked a before and after thanks to its complete redesign of the interface, compatibility with Wayland and a qualitative leap in performance. With RC2, the development team is polishing critical details to ensure the final release meets the community’s high expectations.

For those who want to try GIMP 3.0 RC2, official builds are now available on the project websitewith versions for Linux (in Flatpak format), Windows and macOS. The developers invite users to test this version and provide feedback to help identify and fix potential bugs, thus ensuring the stability and quality of the final version.

GIMP 3.0 is set to become one of the most important updates in the history of this image editor. Each new version candidate reinforces the idea that free software can not only compete, but also innovate. As a user, the expectation to explore the final version and all its potential continues to grow, while the development team continues to refine the final details to offer us a tool capable of setting a new standard in image editing.
