Members of the European Parliament supported, on Thursday, von der Leyen’s candidacy for a new five-year term at the head of the executive body of the European Union, Reuters writes.
“We have cooperated so far and we will continue to cooperate in the future,” Meloni said of his relationship with von der Leyen.
“We are people who have responsibilities and we understand their importance,” Meloni said in an interview with the Italian daily Corriere della Sera, published on Saturday.
Georgia Meloni has been in charge of the Italian government since 2022 and said she supported von der Leyen’s comments in his speech to the European Parliament on the need to control immigration. However, she believes that Europe in general needs less regulation and to find ways to boost its economic competitiveness.
She also highlighted Italy’s importance as the EU’s third-largest economy and a founding member of the bloc, adding that it has the most stable government of all major EU nations.
