Giovanni Becali exploded during the negotiations for the fabulous transfer of the Romanian international even against his footballer: “Come on, jigodie, get up!”

In January 2000, exactly a quarter of a century ago, Giovanni Becali (72 years old) managed one of the best transfers in his career as an impresario.

The agent then managed to mediate the sale of Adrian Mutu (46) from Dinamo Bucharest to Inter Milan, for the handsome sum of 6,500,000 euros.

Giovanni Becali is perhaps the most famous impresario in the history of Romanian football, and over the last decades he has made some remarkable transfers.

Some of the moves had in the foreground Adrian Mutu, the all-time top scorer of the Romanian national team, who can be proud of 35 goals scored in 77 appearances for the national team.

For example, The “Mutu Deal” at Chelsea in August 2003 netted Giovanni Becali a £2,000,000 commission and a Rolls-Royce as a gift.

Also, when he was still at FC Argeș, the formation that raised him, Adrian Mutu was one step away from being taken by Giovanni Becali to Steaua Bucharestand not at Dinamo, where he eventually arrived.

But, through the most recent reaction he had in the public space, the “Brilliant” recalled the first large-scale transfer in which he was involved, namely his first departure across borders.

In January 2000, Dinamo Bucharest managed to sell him, also thanks to Giovanni Becali, for the impressive sum of 6,500,000 euros. Inter acquired him then, and Mutu remembers that as soon as he arrived at the base of the “Nerazzurri” he did not want to leave. This despite the fact that Giovanni Becali was messing with the Italians to squeeze as much money as possible. In fact, Mutu still remembers that he was even offended by the impresario during the negotiations in January 2000:

When I arrived at Inter, at one point things got a little stuck, At that time I didn’t speak Italian and at one point Giovanni was having a discussion with them and he motioned to me and said: “When I am motioning, you stand up” . Being there, I was thinking all the time and I said to him: “Giovanni, I’m not leaving here, how can I get up?”. He sat and after a few minutes he punched the table, stood up to the club leaders and said: “I am a general, you are soldiers!”. I told him: “Dude, calm down a bit, the transfer is coming”. He said to listen to him, I told him I’m not going. And he says: “Stand up, you bathe, jigodie, and come with me!”, said Adrian Mutu, quoted by Fans.

He wanted to take him to Parma, but in the end he respected his wish

Parma, the team for which Mutu played in the 2002-2003 season, tried to transfer the striker since January 2000, and Giovanni Becali was tempted to accept the offer. But, in the end, the wish of the “Brilliant” to stay on “Giuseppe Meazza” was respected by the manager:

When we left there he was babbling in his characteristic style, people were pushing him up the stairs: “No, Giovanni, let’s talk.” He said he wasn’t signing any more, I didn’t say anything, I left the club and we were going to the center, we were going to the hotel and I was saying to Giovanni: “Hey Giovanni, what are you doing?”. He says: “Shut up because I know!” I left him because he seemed a little upset, after a few hundred meters he turns to me and says: «Did you like me? Wait and see what we get for 200 thousand more from them». I went to the hotel and I think he called me at 3 in the morning and said: «What are you doing? (I’m not sleeping, I said) I’m talking to them, listen, don’t you want to go to Parma?». “Hey Giovanni, I came to Inter, I’m not leaving here, I’m not going to Parma.” And he says: “Okay, let’s solve it by morning”. When I woke up and went to breakfast, he said let’s go and sign with Inter, that everything is ok, that they also added something so we don’t get upset”, added Mutu.

Adrian Mutu stayed at Inter Milan for only 6 months, until the summer of 2000, when he was transferred to Verona for 4,000,000 euros. In the Nerazzurri shirt, he contributed 2 goals and an assist in a total of 14 games played.
