NUREMBERG – Global beer production fell last year by 1.7 billion liters to 188 billion, or by a little less than a percentage point, according to Nuremberg hop trader BartHaas.

After fragile growth despite the negative conditions in 2022, last year we expected a small increase again” said one of the two directors of the group, Peter Hintermajster.

Germany remained the fifth largest producer of beer globally, although production fell by 3.3 percent, to 8.5 billion liters.

China remained world number one, with a production of 35.9 billion liters of beer, ahead of the USA with 29.3, Brazil with 14.9 and Mexico with 14.2 billion.

BartHaas stated that the predictions are unreliable.

We are still feeling the consequences of the war in Ukraine. In addition, consumers in many countries are still groaning under the burden of high inflation“, said the other director of the company, Tomas Rajzer.

Producers “can only hope for stable production this year” he added.

In any case, there is enough hops, that is, there will be no shortage in the near future.

The yield in Germany was more generous than the previous year, with 118,415 tons, i.e. 11.5 percent more than in 2022.

It is similar in the world, so a global surplus has appeared. The Nuremberg group suggests farmers to reduce the area under this plant.

This already happened last year, with the largest reduction in the USA.

However, it is not expected that the surplus of hops will affect the price of beer, because the plant itself does not have a large share in the price structure.
