On Friday, July 19, there was a global outage of Microsoft systems, which affected the functioning of many institutions around the world. According to data provided by Microsoft, the outage was experienced over 8.5 million devices running Windows. Problems could be felt, among others, in the case of the operation of banks, airports and media, but not only.
The failure turned out to be a major threat to people waiting for help, as there were difficulties in the operation of the 911 line, as well as to patients waiting to be seen by a doctor and being prepared for surgery.
A woman with cancer has found this out for herself. 41-year-old Chantelle Mooney has been battling the disease since 2022. At that time, she was diagnosed with cervical cancer, and it soon began to metastasize. A few weeks ago, the woman learned that she had been diagnosed with brain lesions and needed urgent surgery.
Mooney says she went to the Royal Preston Hospital in Lancashire, England, on her scheduled appointment to undergo a craniotomy to remove the four-centimetre tumour. A craniotomy is a procedure that involves temporarily opening the skull bone to access the patient’s brain, and is performed, among other things, to remove a brain tumour. Unfortunately, Mooney says, the procedure did not take place because, as a result of a Microsoft systems failure, part of the hospital equipment stopped working.
