- Spam makes up the majority of email traffic
- E-mail providers use more or less effective filters
- GMail is preparing a way for you to protect yourself
Almost every online service after you today I want e-mail. And almost every service wants to send you some great offer on it from time to time, which you won’t use anyway. People struggle with this problem in different ways: someone uses multiple email addressessomeone relies on more or less effective anti-spam solution. Google now wants to combine these possibilities and is working on something it calls “Shielded Email“, something like a shielded or protected e-mail in Czech.
This is an option to create an alias that you enter into the web service and all emails sent to this alias are they will forward to your real email. It’s actually an automated process that you could do yourself, but it would take you a lot longer and you’d have to maintain multiple emails. If the service in question turns out to be problematic, simply you cancel forwarding from the given alias.
Function not yet available. It was discovered by Android Authority experts while analyzing the latest GMail application, where they found several texts that refer to this feature. From this it is already easy to deduce what Google is working on and how it should work. We’ll just hope that Google pushes the feature into production deployment and it won’t take long.
A trick with a plus
If you use a GMail account, you can use another trick now. When you create an address on GMail, for example josef.novak@gmail.comyou can send an email to josef.novak+1@gmail.com, josef.novak+2@gmail.cometc. Therefore, when you enter the address modified in this way in the registration form, you can later use the filter to arrange for the automatic deletion of e-mails.
Note that GMail will select a filter as the default setting filtering by sender. You have to manually delete “From” and set the filter to “To” where you enter the appropriate version. In my case it is “libor+aa”. The advantage of such a solution is that this modified e-mail should be known to only one service, and if it starts receiving spam, you immediately know where the wind is blowing from. The disadvantage is that modification of the modified e-mail is simple and nothing prevents a real spammer from simply returning the e-mail address to its original form. But it’s still better than nothing.
Is spam a problem for you?
