Goblin Slayer -Another Adventurer- Nightmare Feast

Some of my favorite video games in recent years have been tactical games, but I haven’t always liked the genre. When I was younger, I encountered much less exciting tactical games that took me away from online-based combat. When tactical combat is slow and without any charm, I rarely find it interesting, and in the earlier days of the genre this was not unusual. Goblin Slayer -Another Adventurer- Nightmare Feast sadly reminds me of those early days, which is a shame for anime fans.

Honestly, I didn’t know anything about the Goblin Slayer anime or novel before this game. However, a little research revealed to me that the story revolves around the main character Goblin Slayer, who appears in the game, but not as a protagonist. That role is taken by the Guild Master, a young girl who has just inherited the local adventurer’s guild from her late father. Apparently, all major cities in The Four Cornered World have guilds like this, but running a less popular branch isn’t easy at all. However, the Guild Master decides to gather new guild members and help the community fight the monsters – even if it means he has to join the fight himself.

This might sound like a pretty standard story that ties the fights together, but the plot actually takes up a lot more of the game than I expected. Goblin Slayer -Another Adventurer- Nightmare Feast is about fifty percent tactical game and fifty percent visual novel, with huge narrative sequences between each battle. This would be fine if the story wasn’t so edgy and dark, where it only took me half an hour of playtime for the vampire to allusively comment on the Guild Master’s innocence.

Eventually, the visual sequences will end, and it’s time for tactical combat. With a group of adventurers, you are expected to kill various fantasy creatures by moving around the grid, swinging swords and casting spells. If you’ve played a tactical game before this one, nothing that Goblin Slayer -Another Adventurer- Nightmare Feast has to offer will surprise you, which would be fine if the combat wasn’t so slow and a bit boring.

One of the main problems with combat in Goblin Slayer is the size of the maps. Opponents are spaced far apart, meaning you have to spend multiple moves just to get close to them. When you finally arrive, there aren’t many exciting attacks you can pull off. As the game progresses, this problem lessens somewhat, but with so many other exciting games in the genre, it’s hard to forgive such a slow start.

A unique mechanic in Goblin Slayer -Another Adventurer- Nightmare Feast is called Fate and Chance. These are special luck-based abilities that you can equip before combat, and are activated by successful dice rolls. The former of these practically guarantees you a critical hit if you pass a D&D style skill check, while later you can use similar abilities to completely neutralize damage or prevent negative effects. The idea is interesting and adds the necessary depth to the fights.

In order to successfully defeat the monsters of the world, you need to recruit allies through the guild. You might think that running an adventuring guild requires some sort of management, but in Goblin Slayer it’s all down to me where you choose new characters and buy equipment. Before you turn around, you’ll have more oddly named friends than you can use in combat, which would be nice if there was an easy way to determine which ones are actually useful to your team.

I wish I could highlight the positive aspects of Goblin Slayer -Another Adventurer- Nightmare Feast, but they are hard to find. All I can think of are additional gripes, like imprecise controls or visuals that are quite disappointing. It’s been a while since a tactical game disappointed me like this.

Anime fans may find something more in this game, but for me Goblin Slayer -Another Adventurer- Nightmare Feast was a very disappointing tactical game. The story isn’t much better either, with some particularly unpleasant moments that just felt like a poor attempt to shock the audience. There are many great tactical games for fans of online combat, but unfortunately, Goblin Slayer -Another Adventurer- Nightmare Feast is not one of them.
