The Guinness Book of Records, 16 million discs worldwide, the most famous female disco duet and that’s all “Baccara”.
It all started in 1976. Acquaintance Maite (Maria Teresa) Mateos And Maria Mendiola happened on a tour of the Spanish television ballet. As it turned out, the women had a lot in common. During this meeting, Maria was struck by the idea of trying herself and Maite as a musical group and performing on stage. This idea was successfully implemented, and the duo began performing in a nightclub. But their first success came at the Tres Islas hotel on the island of Fuerteventura. The audience liked their performances, and the vocalists became a real “musical” magnet for visitors to the popular resort. At that time, the duo did not have their own author, and they covered already existing hits by such popular artists as ABBA and Donna Summer.
In 1976, they began performing on Spanish television under the name “Duo Venus”. Soon a meeting took place with the German producer, composer and arranger Rolf Soja, an employee of the RCA recording studio, who selected songwriter Frank Dostal for the performers, and also came up with a name for the duet. The first single is released “Yes Sir, I Can Boogie». The song instantly shot to the top of the charts, becoming an international phenomenon. The song catapulted the group into disco icon status, and its popularity remains intact even decades later.
“Yes Sir I Can Boogie” became the first single of the “female duet”, which took and firmly held first place in the charts, and also became the first single of the representatives of Spain!
