good intentions lead to nowhere

Of course, with good intentions, the road that leads straight to hell is paved, writes Andres Pulver, journalist of Lääne-Virumaa Uudiste.

On a gloomy summer evening, the song “Everybody Knows” written by Leonard Cohen and performed by the American rock band Concrete Blonde started playing from the car’s memory stick. I’m not a big fan of covers, but two of them are really good – this one and Patti Smith’s version of Prince’s hit ‘When Doves Cry’.

But that’s it. Leonard Cohen’s text that came to the public in 1988 was what got me thinking. To think about war, politics, politicians, life.

The song says that everyone knows the war is over and everyone knows the good guys lost. Recently, the news spread that nearly a third of Ukrainians are willing to cede territories for the end of the war. In other words, the war would be over with the loss of the good guys.

In fact, there are only a few wars in history that did not end with the defeat of the “good guys”.
