The Polaris Dawn crew performed the first private spacewalk. Amateur astronauts have been sent into space as part of a SpaceX mission. The spacewalk was delayed by almost three hours.
The spacewalk was supposed to take place shortly after 9:00 a.m. (Romania time), but SpaceX postponed the moment, according to Sky News. SpaceX representatives did not provide details about the postponement. They said “all systems look good”.
According to established procedure, two astronauts went into space while the other two remained inside the capsule. It was completely depressurized, and the entire crew was based on space suits, developed by SpaceX.
Polaris Dawn is the first of three missions billionaire and Shift4 founder Jared Isaacman has purchased from SpaceX. The launch has been delayed several times in recent weeks due to poor weather conditions and a helium leak. Eventually the mission was launched from Florida on a Falcon 9 rocket, which carried the Dragon “Resilience” capsule into orbit.
The multi-day trip does not have the International Space Station as its destination. It is actually a free-flight mission around the Earth. The main objective is to achieve the first spacewalk during a private mission. Polaris Dawn also plans to conduct about 40 science experiments. Polaris Dawn is SpaceX’s 14th crewed mission and 5th private spaceflight.
