Goodbye to Bruno Sacco, designer of the Mercedes 190, G-Class and other successes

He died today at the age of 90 (he would have turned 91 in November) Bruno Saccoamong the most appreciated Italian car designers of all time, whose name is inextricably linked to Mercedes. Born in Udine in 1933, he joined the Stella style center in 1958, after experiences in Ghia and Pininfarina.

He remained in Stuttgart until 1999, the year of his retirement, where from 1975 he was head of Mercedes design, giving life to some of the company’s most iconic models.

The most important models

Among Sacco’s early works, perhaps the most important one concerns the Mercedes SL “Pagoda” 113 of the early 1960s, followed by the Mercedes 600, the Star’s flagship at the time. Models that saw the Italian designer part of the working group, under the guidance of Friedrich Geiger.

The big turning point came in 1975 with the appointment of Head of Mercedes Stylea role which, as mentioned, Bruno will leave in 1999 to retire.

Naming all the models designed in a 24-year career would be impossible, among the most important works we cannot fail to mention first of all the Mercedes G-Class, the iconic off-road vehicle born in 1979 capable of crossing the eras while keeping its style practically intact.

However, it is the 1982 Mercedes 190 – produced in almost 1.9 million units – the car that made Sacco most proud of himself. The “baby Mercedes” later became the C-Class over the years.

You can’t help but mention it Mercedes Class A from 1997the company’s first front-wheel drive model with particular mechanics and a difficult start due to the failure of the moose test. It was a real success, with 1.1 million units sold.

Like the 1996 Mercedes E-Class (210 series), later available in a station wagon version. </p>
