The combined electricity consumption of Google and Microsoft amounts to an exorbitant 24 TWh per year. This means that the two companies consume more electricity than many countries in the world. Iceland, Ghana, the Dominican Republic and Tunisia, for example, consume less than the two technology companies. Overall, around 100 countries on earth consume less electricity than Google and Microsoft.

To make the comparison more concrete: Jordan consumes 19 TWh per year with more than 11.5 million inhabitants and an area of around 90,000 km2. Jordan is therefore slightly larger than Ireland. Microsoft, in turn, has around 220,000 employees worldwide, while Alphabet, the parent company behind Google, has around 180,000 permanent employees.

The high power consumption of Google and Microsoft is unlikely to change in the long term, as advances in AI will continue to drive up power consumption, as will the cloud services of the two companies. Although both Google and Microsoft rely on renewable energy, the total consumption cannot be covered by this alone – at least not at present.
