Google announced that by the end of 2025, multi-factor authentication (MFA) will be mandatory on all Google Cloud accounts to improve account security.

Mandatory MFA will be phased in throughout 2025, and all Google Cloud users worldwide will be required to enable MFA by the end of the year.

The mandatory introduction of MFA applies to administrators and all users who have access to Google Cloud services, but not to general user Google accounts.

Starting this month, users who do not use MFA on their accounts will be prompted to do so via a reminder on the console screen. According to Google, this applies to approximately 30% of Cloud users, while the rest have already activated MFA on their accounts.

The second phase will begin in early 2025, where all existing and new Google Cloud users who use a password-only login will receive notifications to enable MFA on the Google Cloud Console, Firebase Console, gCloud, and other platforms.

Google says that the mandatory MFA requirement for Google Cloud users is implemented for increased security, and that this is an important step to protect accounts from increasingly sophisticated threats that can compromise sensitive data and cause significant damage.

The tech giant cites research from CISA (the US Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency) that shows MFA makes users 99% less likely to be hacked, and notes that its own data backs up the agency’s findings. Google found that they are phishing and stolen login credentials are the main attack vectors affecting cloud environments. The company says the new measure is in response to this.

Google has developed user-friendly MFA options, such as passkeys, that use biometric data to make MFA more secure and convenient. This will reduce the likelihood that mandatory MFA will significantly disrupt the user experience.

To enable MFA on your Google Cloud account today, go to “security.google.com” and under “How you sign in to Google” select “2-Step Verification” and follow the on-screen instructions to complete the settings.
