The digital wallet Google Wallet will become available to children, but with some restrictions.
More and more people are using their mobile phones to pay in shops, and soon even children will be able to do the same via a special version of the digital wallet Google Wallet. The publication reports 9to5Google.
Google Wallet should be available next year for children using Family Link-managed Android devices. The connection to Family Link should give parents greater control and information over the children’s actions, but the wallet will also be limited in terms of functions. For example, the kids will be able to make contactless payments in stores, but won’t be able to use cards saved in Google Wallet for online payments.
Similar to the adult version, the transaction will require a PIN, password, fingerprint or facial recognition to authenticate NFC payments.
Any existing payment card that works with Google Wallet can also be added to a child’s wallet, but parents must approve each credit or debit card added to the child’s phone. Meanwhile, parents’ Family Link app will let them see recent transaction history and also remove and block cards remotely.
The children’s version of the wallet will also support gift cards and tickets, but not digital ID documents and health-related information.
According to Google, the intention is that the new functions will begin to be rolled out in 2025 in a number of different countries, but it does not mention anything about which countries will be covered.
