Google announced that passkeys added to Google Password Manager will be automatically synchronized between Windows, macOS, Linux, Android and ChromeOS devices for logged-in users.

Access keys, which use biometric authentication such as fingerprint, facial recognition or screen lock, are a safer and more convenient alternative to passwords for securely logging into applications and websites.

Until now, passkeys could only be stored in Google Password Manager on Android, and could only be accessed on other devices by scanning a QR code with an Android device.

However, you can now add access keys to Google Password Manager from Windows, macOS, Linux, and Android devices. Saved access keys will automatically sync across all your devices, simplifying login using the biometric method of your choice. The company added that ChromeOS support is in beta, with iOS support coming soon.

To ensure the password synchronization process, Google is introducing a new PIN for Google Password Manager as an additional layer of protection. You can still use Windows Hello for passkeys, although Google Password Manager will be suggested by default.

“You can set a six-digit PIN by default or select “PIN Options” to create a longer alphanumeric PIN,” Google explained.

“When you start using passkeys on a new device, you’ll need to either know your Google Password Manager PIN or unlock the screen on your Android device. These recovery factors will allow you to securely access saved passkeys and sync new ones across all your computers and Android devices.”

Google introduced passkey support in Chrome and Android devices in October 2022, and in May 2023 to all Google accounts.

“You can already create access keys for popular sites and apps, such as Google, Amazon, PayPal and WhatsApp,” the company said. “And because Google Password Manager is built into Chrome and Android devices, you can get started today, without having to download additional apps.”
