Google Gemini reads your documents without permission

AI assistants of various kinds such as Microsoft Copilot and Google Gemini have been developed to assist in various ways. However, it has been discovered that Google Assistant takes liberties and analyzes your saved documents in Drive without your express consent.

A user named Kevin Bankston recently discovered this after receiving his tax information he saved on Google Drive summarized via Gemini in Drive. This was a strange turn of events as Bankston never gave Gemini permission to look through the document in question. In an attempt to shut down the connection, Gemini also pointed him in the wrong direction. Once he found the correct settings, it turned out that the connection was already disabled and the service should not have been able to summarize the information in question.

Gemini should be able to help you summarize your own texts.

This is problematic from a privacy perspective as you as a user do not have full control over how your data and files are used.

The toolbar for Gemini in Google Drive is not yet available in Sweden, but when it is, it is relatively easy to turn it off. You need to click into Google Cloud settings and select Data sharing and privacy. There you then have the option to disable Gemini’s access to Drive and Docs.

Gemini in Drive for Workspace users launched at the end of June, and it’s likely that Google will continue to make adjustments to the AI assistant to ensure that your documents, files, and other data aren’t scrutinized unnecessarily.
