Google Home app gets new media player (and much more)

Anyone who has a smart home with Google Home devices can expect a new and simplified app soon. This is all new.

Google is finally giving the media controls in the Home app a new and simpler look. This makes the app more in line with the recognizable Material You style that Google has been using for a long time in software and apps. The redesign introduces new volume controls, a recognizable media player and larger shortcuts.

Starting with the media player. It no longer only shows the artist and the song, but now also shows the album cover of the music you listen to. It also shows which app you are listening in, skip the song, go back a song and pause the music. The media player is very similar to the one you see in the quick settings panel.

Below the media player there is now a larger volume control and two buttons: ‘Stop casting’ and ‘Open’. The controls and buttons do exactly what you expect them to do. The Google Home app also looks more modern and clearer. Previously, the volume slider was bent, no album art was shown and the app shortcuts were smaller on screen.

More Google Home updates

In addition to the new media player, Google is introducing more useful Home functions. For example, notifications from your security cameras become smarter thanks to AI. Descriptions of what is happening around your house become more detailed, for example from ‘dog recognized’ to ‘small dog digging in the garden recognized’.

Do you have a Wear OS smartwatch? Then you will soon be able to view live images from your smart doorbell directly on your wrist. And Google is also announcing a new ‘Member access’ feature. This gives other people limited access to control your Google Home. This is useful for housemates, partners, friends or children.
