Google is working on a new feature for its mobile app that should significantly improve search with voice commands. The search results refresh automatically while you are talking and you can then ask follow-up questions in a natural way.
Google is testing an improved voice mode in its mobile app. When searching with spoken commands, you can immediately continue talking to ask a follow-up question, after which you will see the new results appear almost immediately. The Google app then continues to listen to you and refreshes the search results in real time, as can be seen on a video from AssembleDebug.
The new way of searching resembles the interaction with smart voice assistants and chatbots. Google’s own AI assistant Gemini recently also has a voice function, called Gemini Live, which is available for Android users. An important difference is that the new feature in the Google app does not give you ready-made answers, like Gemini, but only the search results.
Follow-up questions
The improved voice function in the Google app is especially useful if you want to do multiple searches in a row. The current voice function in the Google app is limited to single searches. You then have to tap the microphone icon again to record your next question and Google will then forget the context of your previous search.
A similarly smooth handling of follow-up questions has also been available for some time on the smart home app Google Home with the Continued Conversation function. You don’t have to say ‘Hey Google’ every time to ask your smart speaker or smart screen the next question.
The updated speech mode in the Google app is not yet publicly available. It is also not yet known when exactly Google will add this.
