‘Google is saying goodbye to Chromecast and this will be its successor’

Google’s new streaming player has surfaced in leaked images. The TV box looks very different from the current Chromecast. Also striking: Google is said to be saying goodbye to the name Chromecast.

Images have leaked of the Google TV Streamer, which is set to be the successor to the Chromecast. Google is moving away from the oval design of the HDMI dongle, according to the images obtained by 9to5Google.

The new gadget will have a shape that looks more like a set-top box, but very compact and with a sloping top. Also visible are two cables sticking out of the back, presumably for power and HDMI.

Google TV Streamer

Not only is the Chromecast’s appearance disappearing, so is its product name. According to 9to5Google, the Chromecast name is making way for the boring-sounding ‘Google TV Streamer’.

The first Chromecast came on the market in 2013. It is not known how many were sold in total, but in 2017 the counter was already at 55 million units. The latest version is the Chromecast with Google TV, which was launched in the US in 2020 and appeared in the Netherlands in 2022.

Remote control

The leaked remote control of the new ‘Google TV Streamer’ looks similar to the latest version of the Chromecast, but there are several changes. For example, the new remote is slightly longer than the current one and all the buttons have changed. For example, the volume button has been moved from the right side to the front. The home button and the voice control button are also in different places.

The Google TV Streamer will likely be unveiled during Google’s August 13 event, where the Pixel 9 phones and Pixel Watch 3 smartwatches will be announced, among other things.
