Google is scrapping support for short links next year

Links created via Google’s URL shortener goo.gl will come stop working August 25, 2025. That means millions, and possibly billions, of shortened links created over the years will no longer work after next summer.

We understand that the transition from using goo.gl shortened links may cause complications. – Google

If you are still using goo.gl links after August 23rd this year, Google will show you a box informing you that the links will expire, before you are redirected to the page. The box will first appear for a certain number of all goo.gl links but that number will progressively get bigger the closer we get to the end date.

This box will appear when you use a goo.gl link.

Google introduced the URL shortener in 2009 as a convenient way to share links across the web. In 2018, the company announced that it would discontinue the service but that the existing goo.gl links would continue to work. But now those days are coming to an end. If you still use a goo.gl link after August 2025, you will get a 404 box.
