Google Maps Brings Crash Reporting to CarPlay

Google Maps, like Waze, supports user reports on situations such as traffic accidents, road conditions and speed cameras, and now this feature is finally available on CarPlay.

Reporting accidents on Google Maps was first launched on Android and iOS in early 2019. Users can add a report directly in the navigation interface, informing other drivers about traffic jams, accidents, and speed cameras along the route. However, this feature was not available on Android Auto or CarPlay, and instead only showed reports submitted by other users.

Now it seems that the situation is Changing. Google Maps for CarPlay has in fact introduced support for reporting accidents, via a server-side update. A triangular button, similar to a warning sign, opens a reporting interface with several options for reporting different types of situations:

  • Accident
  • Slowdown
  • Works in progress
  • Lane closure
  • Vehicle broken down
  • Object on the road
  • Speed Cameras

This feature works similarly to Waze, which has supported even more detailed incident reporting through its app for years.

The update is rolling out now, but it is not yet available to all users.
