Google Maps for Android, iOS is getting a new numbering system for future versions

From the first day of their creation until today, the Google Maps application which gathers countless visits around the world on a daily basis, now getting a new system for numbering future editions.

For the vast majority of Google apps, version numbers mean nothing. When Google apps go, for example, from the version 4 -> 5, it doesn’t mean there are big changes in this update.

Until recently, Google Maps for Android version numbers were structured like 11.155.0103. The number 11, which would be the main version number in other applications, was last changed (from 10) in 2021. (In the iOS app, there is a different system: 6.142.0.)

From now on, version numbers for Google Maps will be: 24.47.01.697822364. It is similar to other Google software such as Play services.

The first number is probably associated with the year and the second indicates the number of the week. It better reflects how these apps get steady, if not weekly, releases.

Another benefit of this change is that Google Maps for Android and iOS now use the same version number system. This new approach is available on the App Store and should be rolling out now via the Play Store. When Google notes the version you need for a new future, the unified approach will help.
