Google Maps Is Easier to Use on iPhone – Just Not for Everyone Yet

On iOS smartphones, Google Maps navigation can only work when the app itself is turned on. The giant is testing a solution, however – Live Activities, which will offer similar functionality to what we have on Android.

Live Activities are becoming more widely available

Google Maps is undoubtedly a great and very popular navigation. We use it not only in cars, but also on smartphones, especially if you have landed in a new city. If you have an Android phone, it is quite simple, because the navigation instructions will be displayed even on a locked screen. There is no need to walk around with an unlocked phone with an active application, which saves battery life. However, iPhone owners do not have such conveniences. In iOS, the Google Maps application cannot send navigation instructions in notifications. However, Google is testing another method, called Live Activities.

This solution was announced back in 2023, but it has not been fully available on iOS until now. As is usually the case with news provided by the giant from Mountain View, new capabilities are activated on the server side and this is done in waves. However, it seems that iPhone smartphone owners may finally see full availability. In recent weeks, more and more users have been boasting that Live Activities is already working on their smartphone and providing navigation instructions. It looks more or less like the image below.

The relevant information may appear in a notification window available even on a locked screen or on the Dynamic Island bubble, as in the photo above. Thanks to this type of advice, we know not only how far we have to go to our destination, but also when and where to turn if the route we are taking is more complicated. It is difficult to say at the moment when the service will be available to everyone, but you can certainly check from time to time whether it has not already appeared on your site. With Google, we never know the day or the hour ;-).
