Google Messages: Will get the ability to send original quality photos via RCS

Soon, the most popular RCS app on Android, Google Messages, will get the ability to send original quality photos.

This is a new setting in the Photo Picker, a toggle that says either HD or HD+. Once you press the button, you have more descriptive options. One reduces the image size and quality and the other sends the photo to the original quality using more data.

This change was discovered by Android Authority while analyzing the beta APK for Messages.

Last year, Google Messages gained support for sending Ultra HDR images via RCS. Introduced with Android 14, Ultra HDR combines a standard JPEG with additional metadata. Software that doesn’t support it just sees a JPEG. The software that supports it uses the metadata to recreate the wider dynamic range of the original HDR image.

This toggle is available now in the beta version of Google Messages, but will make its way to the stable version soon.
