Google is rolling out the first update for the Pixel 9 phones. The devices are getting a relatively small update, which tightens security and fixes minor issues.
First Google Pixel 9 update now available for download
Good news for (future) owners of a Google Pixel 9, Pixel 9 Pro, Pixel 9 Pro XL and Pixel 9 Pro Fold. The search giant is rolling out the first software upgrade to the devices, in the form of the September Android security patch. This provides the smartphones with the latest security, which fixes problems in Android.
There are also improvements for minor issues that the Pixel 9 smartphones are currently struggling with. For example, issues with Wi-Fi connections are resolved, which should make it more stable. The September update is not only available for the Pixel 9 devices, but is also rolling out to older Google smartphones. We list them below.
Do you want to download and install the update? You will automatically receive a notification when the September patch is available for your Google Pixel. Of course, you can also check for updates manually. You can do this by opening the settings and going to ‘System’. Then tap ‘Software updates’ and ‘System updates’. The latest software will then appear automatically.
Over the Pixel 9
The Google Pixel 9 follows last year’s Pixel 8 and is the search giant’s latest flagship. This year, the company is releasing no less than four devices. The entry-level model, the Pixel 9, costs 899 euros and has a new design, better cameras and all sorts of handy AI tricks.
The Pixel 9 Pro looks a lot like the regular Pixel 9, but has a slightly better screen and an extra camera. The Pixel 9 Pro XL distinguishes itself – as the name suggests – by the large screen and also has a large battery. The Pixel 9 Pro Fold is a foldable device, for which you have to dig deep into your pocket. Google sells the Fold for 1899 euros.

→ Google Pixel 9 Pro XL review: Clearly high-end, but where’s the AI?
Let’s not beat around the bush: the Google Pixel 9 is an excellent smartphone. Google has made some nice upgrades that you can actually use. The screen is brighter, the battery lasts longer, the new fingerprint scanner is blazing fast, and the Tensor G4 performs better.
We are also fans of the new design, although the Pixel 9 looks more generic than its predecessors. On the other hand, there is little to criticize about the cameras and the update policy. We are disappointed that Google has not improved the charging speed. Who wants to wait over an hour and a half for a full battery?
The recommended retail price of 899 euros is also a bit steep. The Google Pixel 9 has become more expensive again, which means you have to dig deep into your pockets for this entry-level model. In our opinion, this is only worth it if you have an older Pixel phone and do not want to switch to another brand. Pixel 8 (Pro) owners would be better off skipping a year, or waiting until the price has dropped.
