Google really needs to watch out now because here is SearchGPT

OpenAI adds a search engine to ChatGPT. The new SearchGPT feature summarizes information from websites for you and could become a competitor for Google.

OpenAI has its new search function SearchGPT released in a first test version. For now, ten thousand users will have access to the new feature in ChatGPT. Others can request to be placed on a waiting list.

SearchGPT uses GPT-4 models to summarize information found on the web. The results include text and photos, and OpenAI also adds links to the sources used. A sidebar shows related searches. SearchGPT will not be a separate service, but an integral part of ChatGPT.

For some searches, SearchGPT also takes your location into account to improve the accuracy of results. For example, you can see a list of nearby restaurants or get a local weather forecast.

Google AI results under fire

Google has recently started placing AI-generated results in its search results. This has been criticized a lot due to a number of embarrassing mistakes. Since then, Google has shown these AI Overviews to fewer users. The Google function is not yet available in Europe.

Major implications for publishers

For publishers and media companies, these kinds of AI results in search engines are a growing problem, as they summarize the most important information and reduce the likelihood that people will click through to sites to read more about a topic.
