Google starts the fight against AI photos. It will refer to them this way

Google Photos has recently expanded its AI features for image editing, such as Magic Editor a Magic Eraserto all users without the need for a subscription. These tools, which were originally only available to Pixel or Google One users, allow quick and efficient photo editing even without professional knowledge. Users can remove unwanted objectsadjust the lighting or even create new compositions, which used to require sophisticated software skills.

These features are now supported by other devices with Android a iOS, including Chromebooks with ChromeOS 118 and higher. A big step towards Google transparency is the introduction of notifications about the use of AI modifications. Google Photos will now display information if a photo has been edited with tools using generative AI, and this information will be part of IPTC metadata.

This also includes details, when the image was composited from multiple frames (e.g. the “Best Take” feature on the Pixel 8 and Pixel 9) or used non-generative editing functions such as “Add Me”, which allows you to combine different frames taken in a short time, for example, for group photos. With this move, Google responds to the growing need to inform users about the use of artificial intelligence, while at the same time respecting its ethical principles in the field of AI.

Transparency is intended to encourage users’ confidence in using these powerful photo editing tools without the need for detailed technical knowledge or expensive subscriptions. These changes show that even though Google is one of the biggest players in the market for AI tools, they are not indifferent to the future and feel the need to clearly inform about this type of content.
