Google testing temporary email feature to block spam in Gmail

10minutemail.com is one of the popular tools that provides free temporary email addresses that you can use to sign up for spammy services. But Google could soon replace this great service.

According to Android Authority’s analysis of the Gmail app’s Android APK file, a new tool called ‘Shielded Email’ can be used to perform similar tasks to 10MinuteMail.com within Gmail. The code includes a string mentioning the shielded email feature, as well as a system to generate a unified ‘one-time’ address and deliver the message to the actual email.

One code string reads, “Please use the email address generated for this app. “You can protect against online tracking and data leaks.” Shielded email addresses can be deleted at any time, and email forwarding functions are also disabled when deleted. The feature isn’t in action yet, but Android Authority has created a visual representation of the feature in screenshots.

If the temporary email feature were added to Android, Chrome, or both, it would be a very useful tool for users who want to protect their real email addresses. Gmail has an estimated 1.8 billion active users, making it the most widely used email service in the world. Therefore, providing a simple way to effectively block spam emails would be greatly welcomed.

Of course, it is still unknown whether this feature will actually be introduced. Google often announces useful features like this, then goes unused for months and eventually discards them before they reach user screens. I hope this time we break away from that trend and apply it quickly.
