Google TV stops renting movies and series: here’s how

You will no longer be renting your favorite movies and series via the Google TV app. Instead, Google is choosing to make titles available on a more familiar platform.

Google TV no longer the place for movies and series

Looking for a movie or series that isn’t on any of your streaming services? Chances are you can rent or buy it via Google TV. You can find this app on both your Android smartphone and smart TVs with Android. Google TV has been replacing the Movies and Series section in the Play Store for a few years now, but now Google is also giving up this ‘new’ service.

The search giant announced it in an English blog post. Users who previously purchased a film or series on Google TV can continue to watch it in the app on their smart TV or Android device. Anyone who wants to rent or buy a film or series in the future will have to go to another Google platform: YouTube.

That’s right: Google has chosen to rent and sell movies and series only on YouTube from now on. This was already possible before, but after this update this is the only platform for this. It seems that Google wants to rent and sell more movies and series by only making this possible on its video platform with the most users.

YouTube for movies and series: also in the Netherlands?

Google does not make it clear in which countries the new regulation will apply. For example, it is unknown whether we can continue to use Google TV in the Netherlands. The search giant only lets go that renting and buying via the mobile Google TV app will stop within the coming weeks, depending on your location.

For those who are fans of the Google TV app, we have a small consolation. On the Dutch support page about buying and renting movies and series on Google TV, nothing is mentioned about the transition to YouTube. Perhaps that will be communicated in the coming months.
