How many times have you complained that the pictures sent in Google Messages via RCS look really bad? The company is aware of the overcompression issue and is working on a solution to fix it as soon as possible.
There is a very good chance that the RCS messaging protocol will replace regular SMS as it comes bundled with several advantages. Those who use Google Messages on a daily basis know about them, but they can’t escape the thought that all the images they send to their loved ones are compressed so much that almost none of the details that make them special can be seen. For nothing there is location sharing, emoji reactions or group chats if you have pictures shrunk to the brim.
What would be the solution for quality pictures
WhatsApp already offers the possibility to send pictures in HD resolution, if users want it. It looks like Google wants to do the same and improve the experience. How? By raising the compression ceiling from the current 2,048 pixels high to 8,192 pixels wide and high. The JPEG quality will be set to 100. If “Send photos faster” is enabled, it will compress images to 2,048 pixels. In this case, the JPEG quality will be reduced to 90.
Who is to blame for massively compressed images
If we compare what is happening in the case of Google with the messaging services of Apple and Samsung, where the pictures sent via RCS are not compressed as much, the conclusion is simple: Google Messages is to blame. Let’s see how long it will take them to solve the problem.
One thing’s for sure: Once Google implements its plan for flawless image quality, Google Messages users should no longer have problems sending pictures or viewing images received from friends via RCS.
