I suspect that the elderly woman I met on the subway was subjected to voice phishing.
Actively check for phishing by contacting the phone number directly.
Fortunately, it was confirmed that it was not phishing… “I’m proud to help grandma”
The story of two male high school students who helped an elderly woman who asked them to take a photo of a copy of her bankbook and send it to her at a station on Seoul Subway Line 4 out of concern about voice phishing crimes has been revealed, giving a heartwarming story.
On the 25th, a video titled ‘It’s like grandma’s voice phishing, a twisted ending for two high school boys’ was released on the YouTube channel ‘KMIB’.
According to the video, Eugene Seo, a second-year student at Hongik University High School in Seongbuk-gu, Seoul, and Namgung Sol, a second-year student at Gyeongdong High School, were passing through Sungshin Women’s University Station on Seoul Subway Line 4 around 2 p.m. on the 4th when they received an unexpected request from an old woman inside the station.
An elderly woman who was not good at using a cell phone said she needed to take a picture of her bankbook and send it somewhere, and asked two students to help her with the process.
The two students, who felt suspicious of the grandmother’s request, suspected voice phishing and decided to check again by calling the phone number that said they had called the grandmother directly.
The students contacted the phone number again and first asked for the name of the person who called. Afterwards, it was confirmed that his name matched the name saved in the grandmother’s cell phone, and it was even confirmed that the person in question was a deacon from a certain church.
In the video, Eugene Seo said, “He even explained the exact reason (the other person called). “I kept checking, but there wasn’t anything particularly flawed,” he explained the situation at the time.
It turned out that the grandmother who asked for their help was an elderly person living alone, and due to the complicated document process in applying for a pension, they asked a young man who volunteered at a church the grandmother attended to do administrative work on her behalf.
Later, during the process of submitting documents, I realized that a copy of my bankbook was missing, and I received a call from the young man asking me to send him a copy of my bankbook as soon as possible.
The grandmother, who did not know how to take a picture of her bankbook and send it, said she came to the subway station and wandered around for a while until she met two students.
However, the two students, who suddenly received the grandmother’s request for help and a suspicious request to send a copy of her bankbook somewhere, were worried that the grandmother might fall victim to fraud, and it took quite a while for them to figure out that the grandmother was in an urgent situation. It took this. Fortunately, the grandmother was able to submit the documents on time with the help of two students.
According to the video, the students Eugene Seo and Namgoong Sol, who helped the grandmother that day, were the student council presidents of their respective schools. On this day, he left school early to attend the Seongbuk-Gangbuk Student Participation Committee, and happened to meet his grandmother in the station.
In the video, student Namgoongsol said, “Jinseo and I met that day at a gathering of all the student council presidents in our area,” adding, “Wearing the title of democratic citizen in school uniform, we held various discussions and events with the spirit of ‘students making their voices heard.’ “It’s in progress,” he said.
Although the two students ended up being late that day because they were helping their grandmother, they said that they felt proud of helping the grandmother who was in trouble.
