GREAT NEWS, A BIG VICTORY FOR OUR ATHLETICS: Belgrade’s home EP in running for 2027! – Athletics

Belgrade – the proud host of the European Running Championships in 2027!

Belgrade will host another major athletics competition – the European Running Championship in 2027, on sections of 10, 21 and 42 kilometers. This decision was made at the regular annual convention of European Athletics, which was held in Skopje, and Serbia’s candidacy was given priority over the Netherlands.

The organizers of this European championship, which will be held on April 17 and 18, 2027, will be the Belgrade Marathon and the Serbian Athletics Federation, with the patronage of the City of Belgrade and the Ministry of Sports, and all as part of the celebration of the great jubilee – 40 years since the foundation of the Belgrade Marathon. Also, the European Running Championship will be the best possible prelude to the specialized exhibition EXPO 2027 with the theme “Game(s) for Humanity”, which will be held from May 15 to August 15, 2027 in Belgrade.

It is interesting that last year European Athletics made a decision to entrust the organization of the European Championship in street running for 10 kilometers, half marathon and marathon to the organizers of marathon races, and the host of the first Old Continent Championship according to the new rules will be Belgium on April 12 and 13, 2025.

The Serbian delegation at the congress in Skopje, which consisted of Predrag Momirović, competition director of the Serbian Athletics Federation, Darko Habuš, director of the Belgrade Marathon, Jovan Kantar, executive director of the Serbian Athletics Federation, and Katarina Stevanović, PR manager of the Serbian Athletics Federation, received strong support from European Athletics members. . Their dedication and many years of experience in organizing events of global importance were key factors in the decision for Belgrade to become the host of this prestigious championship.

“We are very pleased that the host of the European Running Championship will be Belgrade, a city that has proven itself many times as an impeccable host of major competitions. The European Running Championships is the latest event in the European Athletics calendar and represents the very core of our strategy in expanding the running movement across the continent.”said the President of European Athletics Dobromir Karamarinov and added:

“One of the main goals of this championship will be to unite elite runners and recreational athletes on the track, and we look forward to having professionals and amateurs start together and to the opportunity to watch them achieve their competitive ambitions together in Belgrade.” stated Karamarinov.

It is expected that more than 25 thousand runners in all three disciplines will participate in the championship in Belgrade.

“Another great event for our country! We are proud to have been given the opportunity to organize the European Running Championship in 2027 as part of the 40th Belgrade Marathon. This will be a great opportunity to show Belgrade and Serbia in the best light,” said Predrag Momirović.

It should be noted that the European Running Championships will be the fourth major international athletics competition in the last few years, which will be hosted by Serbia. Previously, our country was a more than successful organizer of the European and World Indoor Athletics Championships in 2017, i.e. in 2022 and the World Cross Country Championships in 2024.

“This is a great victory for Serbia and Belgrade and represents a huge honor for the Belgrade Marathon and the Serbian Athletics Federation. We have been given a lot of trust and I have no doubts that our organizational team will justify that trust with their dedicated and hard work. We will do everything to meet the highest organizational standards, but more than that and to have a true athletic spectacle in Belgrade. I have no doubt that we will prove to be great hosts and that Serbia and our capital will send the most beautiful picture to the world.”said Darko Habuš, director of the Belgrade Marathon.
