One of the ways for large and important sporting events to obtain public funding is to qualify for major event status. So far, such an honor has been given to the organization of the World Rally Championship stage in 2024 and the final tournament of the European Basketball Championship for men (FIBA EuroBasket 2025) for the organization of the group tournament and the final stage in Latvia. Three more are being evaluated, and new criteria for applicants are also being developed, as those working in the industry until now recognize them as unmotivating.
Under the responsibility of two ministries
Sports federations, the Latvian Council of Sports Federations, the Latvian Olympic Committee and the Latvian Paralympic Committee have the right to apply for state funding to support sports programs and events up to 40,000 euros, where the co-financing granted by the Ministry does not exceed 50% of the total costs. This year, 34 events received such support: 12 of them – 189,000 euros, 18 competitions – 227,000 euros, four competitions – 343,000 euros, Aleksandrs Samoilovs, director of the Sports Department of the Ministry of Education and Science, explained to the Saeima Sports Subcommittee.
