Data broker Gravy Analytics was hacked. Location information from millions of iPhone and Android users is at risk.
Gravy Analytics’ parent company Unacast reported a data breach earlier this month and said that an unauthorized person had connected to its AWS cloud storage environment using an “illegal access key.” Hackers received files that “may contain personal data” collected from users of third-party services.
The hackers claim to have customer lists and location data from smartphones that show people’s exact movements. Some information was published on closed forums.
Gravy Analytics says it tracks more than a billion devices worldwide every day. Security researchers who saw a sample of the data collected by Gravy Analytics confirmed that the information could be used to track a person’s recent location without anonymization. (MacRumors)
